Bubblegum

A squishy, satisfying, sticky substance that you chew. Does that sound familiar? Has an image of thought popped into your head yet? I'm talking about something that we all know we stuck under tables once before. Bubblegum, chewing gum, teachers worst enemy!! Have you ever thought of how bubblegum is made? What's the story behind gum? I'm going to tell you the whole procedure of this delicious sweet!!!


How is it made?
It starts with a little gum base. The stuff that makes it so satisfying and chewy! In old days it was traditionally made from tree resin. Nowadays its synthetic - made from rubbers and plastic. The gum base is placed into a huge mixer and then add flavouring and colour. During the mixing they pour in the mixer through a little tube glucose syrup - a sweetener just to add that touch of flavour. And plus without it the gum would be hard so they need it to keep its constantly soft to be able to chew it calmly. Afterwards they add dextrose, a powdered sweetener. The texture blends for 20 minutes as the stirring action builds up more heat as it goes on. So everything can melt together. When It's finished it will end up as a very sticky soft mixture. It will feel the consistency of bread dough. Now it's transferred into a machine called the pre-extruder. The machine tightens/squeezes the mixture through a thin narrow opening. As satisfying as squeeze toothpaste from its tube!! Afterwards it's thin enough to go through the extruder which shapes it into a continuous long stream of manageable bubblegum which becomes cut into small bite-sized pieces later on. It has to go through an excursion process that will heat up the gum or otherwise if it was put into the wrapper it will stick everywhere. Now the cooling chamber. The gum goes through for about 15 minutes between 37 and 45 degrees fahrenheit. When it's cooled down it comes down to the last step. The “cut-and-wrap”. We obviously know what’s gonna happen now, right? There's actually a machine that can complete that task in a fraction of a second!


Why can't we swallow gum?
Our body struggles to digest plastics and rubber and near the start of the last paragraph i told you that that's what was made of gum right? So if we swallow gum our body can't digest it correctly and it gets sticky inside our body which can be quite dangerous in some cases.

Broom - a machine

BROOM
Dirty floors!! They're such a hassle so you wanna buy an expensive machine to clean (eg. vacuum)? There's a way easier solution that's cheaper and is surprisingly a machine that goes unnoticed.


A machine is something that has a force applied to it such as, pull, push, levers, etc. That even makes a broom a machine. The fulcrum of a broom that you are using would be the hand you're using closest to the ground. Your top hand then operates the lever that pivots about your bottom hand.


The bristles of the broom is actually another example of a different simple machine. Each bristle acts as a spring when it bends it wants to return to its original form. The bristles at the end of the broom are typically made of straw, hair, plastic, etc. A broom is a great help in life but it’s starting to be replaced by high-tech vacuums. A broom is a daily help in life and way lighter, easier, uses less power, and isn’t loud!!

Don't waste money. Just get something simple.

Sexologist

Just like a biologist, they study biology, a sexologist studies sexuality. Sexology is a scientific study of human sexuality such as psychosexual interactions, sexual interests, behaviour, and functions. Sexology encompasses many different fields such as biology, psychology, medicine, gender studies and much more. There are actually many careers in the sexology topic such as research, sexual education or even counselling. Most issues sexologists have to deal with is the sexual interests in men and woman and their desires. The main point is seeing the transformation of clients and finding out if their sexual interests decrease The vast majority of sexologists did not get degrees in sexology, but rather were trained to study sex within another discipline at the graduate level (e.g., medicine, psychology, anthropology, sociology, etc.).

High Impact Car Race Results

What did we do?

We had 3 Races.

  • Fastest car race
  • Furthest car race
  • Car that stops closest to the green line
It's pretty simple on how they worked. Which car can go the fastest, which car can stop the furthest, and which car can stop closest to the green line. Everyone had the same car and we had a completely free choice of what materials we wanted to use to improve our vehicle and even what measurement we want our slope to be (mine was 32 degrees) so everyone had a fair choice!

The effects of my modifications

On my car, we used clay and made an aerodynamic based car by putting a sloped on the sides and placing a spoiler on the back. This made it go really fast but not quite as far. Either way, I'm still really proud of my model (car no. 5)

The results



These results are based on the furthest car. As you can see the best results is the more obvious one (car no. 7) that has reached more than 4.5 meters! The lowest one was car no.4 who has gotten way below 1.5 meters :( My car was no. 5 and i had quite a low score as i had said on the effects of my modifications.





These results are based on the fastest car. The numbers on the left are in seconds so we are looking for the shortest bar. My group had just gotten 1 second but we were beaten by car no. 6 who had gotten below 1 second!

The physics of car racing

The Physics Of Car Racing:

1. What has been done to make this a 'fair test'?

  • All the cars are the exact same
  • They all have to drive forward
  • We all have a selection of choice of what materials we want on the car.


2. What forces are needed to make the car go faster
and now have you modified your car accordingly?

We need to add some weight (eg. a stone) on the front to make thrust (creates acceleration). If we add it to the back it will spin around and fail the race.

3. What forces are needed to make the car stop and
what adjustments have you made to try & stop it by the line?

Add something such as a parachute to create drag (attempts slowing the car down) and Friction (stops the car).

4. What forces are needed to make the car travel further
and what adjustments have you made to achieve this?

A balanced force; if something is NOT moving it will continue to not move; if something IS moving it will continue to move at the same speed and in the same direction.

Physics of car racing

What i tried today - why i tried it?
Today Xij and I did some random experimenting and we had this triangular shape out of sticks and we used clay to stick it on the top of our car and it went really well as it went really fast and straight.

What happened when i tried to race it?
Well as i said before it went really fast and straight! The only thing is that we aren't sure how to make it stop yet.

What will i try next time?
Next time I'm gonna try figure out some ways and experiment to make it stop.

What research did I do?
Xij did most of the researching so I'm not quite sure what we looked at

Tug o war - Friction

What can we play tug o war on that has more friction?

Carpet - I think carpet is a good surface because the carpet is fluffy so there's more friction
Concrete - It got 50/50 friction depending on what's on your feet but I don't think it's the best place to play.
grass - the grass has less friction because it's muddy and slippery so everyone will slip.
Lino - this one has maybe quite a bit of friction not that bad for slipping

I found out that for me I found the concrete easiest and the carpet wasn't bad it was just painful on my hands. The hardest was the grass cause my feet kept on moving in the mud even when I was standing in a statue position. The lino was correct for me because i had one moment that i kind of struggle staying in one place but it was all good.
